Why From Sac?

One of the first groups I ever joined on Facebook was called "You know you're from Sacramento when . . ."  Some of these made me laugh. "You know you're from Sacramento when you knew Cal Worthington's 'Go See Cal' slogan" (and maybe you thought he was saying "pussy cow" and you had no idea what that was, some kind of hybrid bovine-cat?). "You know you're from Sacramento when your family comes to town and you take them to the Capitol, Old Sac, and the Train Museum" (it's called the California State Railroad Museum, asshole. Oh.). "You know when you're from Sacramento when you took a field trip to Sutter's Fort" (okay, now this is starting to get depressing).

To think of Sacramento often means to think of a quaint, easily definable existence, one where everyone has at least ten state workers in their family, has been to Arco Arena (it'll always be Arco, won't it?), and has eaten something you shouldn't have at the State Fair. When out-of-towners ask about Sacramento, we're proud about our location - it's between San Francisco and Tahoe, did you know? But when we
think about Sacramento, when we talk about Sacramento, it's rarely because of the great writers, poets, and artists who live and breathe and walk and work and sleep in Sacramento, their home.

We have a great writing community. A vibrant one. It's time for more people to know about it. And so we're calling on you to help us make this a reality. I've spent time in Stockton, Lodi, Modesto, Roseville, South Sac, Elk Grove, Natomas, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Placerville, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Fair Oaks, Oak Park, DPH, Midtown, and most of the surrounding neighborhoods and I've seen you. I've heard you. I know you're out there. Come help us, so when that five-year-old joins Facebook in a few years, and they join the "You know you're from Sacramento when" group, they'll read, "you submitted a story to
From Sac."

Hey, it could happen. Right?

Rock. Such a great idea. And, how true is that about the trips to Old Sac and the train museum? If I had a dollar for every time I've taken people there, I would, well ... I could have paid for some of the parking. (And yes, it will always be Arco, even though that's sort of sad anyway.)

Rock on Sacramento art scene, and I totally am behind you guys.
